Helen Shaver: What a talent!
I just watched 'Desert Hearts' on Turner Movies; it had just been restored.
I met Helen around 1977. She was quite the partier back then and frequented my bar many nights. We became friends. She was beautiful, intelligent, and becoming well-known. Her sister was already famous as the "Naked Nun."
At my club, Helen usually brought friends, so I never got enough time with her. Then, one night, she invited me to dinner at her place. I was in heaven! She cooked a wonderful dinner, and we spent most of the night drinking wine while she recited her own erotic poetry. As much as this stirred me, I was too chickenshit to make a move. (You only regret what you don't do!)
She left for Hollywood not long after that. I did have another great night with her at a Toronto Film Festival party later on. I had the MacLean brothers with me, and we did some serious partying, but that's another story.
I just looked at her filmography – another wow! She is now a noted director of Vikings and so many TV shows, like The Penguin. I am so happy for her.

Can't wait to hear about Helen.
Sigh, indeed. Helen Shaver is one sexy woman. Several years ago, I met her very briefly on a tv shoot in Vancouver and her intense gaze and confident smile took my breath away. And don't even get me started on that amazing voice ...
You're a lucky man, Gary. I didn't get to hear any sailor poems. Thanks very much for the story.
